As we reflect on the 20th anniversary of Katrina, I’m reminded of the changes and improvements made in response to this tragedy with our disaster work.
This was the time many of us first learned to text on our cell phones so we could communicate with loved ones! A major change also came to the Louisiana 211 network at this time.
Before Katrina, you couldn’t dial 2-1-1 with your cell phone. In the 24 hours after Katrina made landfall, cell phone providers came together and implemented programming to allow calls to 2-1-1, thus connecting many in need of vital services.
