Wabash Tunnel: Pittsburgh’s monument to missed opportunities

by The 100 Companies

The Wabash Tunnel, burrowed through Mount Washington in 1903, was meant to be the grand gateway for the Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal Railway. Yet, this ambitious railroad quickly faltered, leaving the tunnel largely unused.

Its “forgotten” history is truly a tale of missed opportunities. After rail service ceased, the tunnel sat dormant for decades. It was briefly resurrected for the ill-fated “Skybus” mass transit project in the 1970s and even stored old buses.
Despite various proposals, it largely remained a monument to grand plans until its 2004 reopening as a reversible HOV lane, finally finding a purpose over a century later.
