The quiet skill of responding

by The 100 Companies

In both business and life, I’ve reflected on the difference between responding and reacting. It’s not easy. When we feel unheard or slighted, the instinct is to prove a point. When someone’s reaction lands hard, we’re reminded their experience may be different from ours.

Our interpretations are shaped by a lifetime of words, moments and circumstances, coloring how we perceive the present. The skill comes in pausing: stepping back to assess, giving space and remembering we’re all in different places.

Responding allows us to release the heat of reaction and let go of burdens never ours to carry or fix.
